A Journey Through Colonial History

Join us as we step back in time at Tryon Palace, the first permanent state capitol of North Carolina, and now a living history museum like no other! 🏰 Nestled in New Bern, NC, this meticulously reconstructed colonial palace offers an immersive dive into 18th-century life, with costumed interpreters, period reenactments, and stunning historical gardens.

From meeting soldiers stationed at the palace encampments to receiving their very own “pox jar” from the apothecary, Dean and Gertie had an unforgettable hands-on learning experience! Was our visit fit for royalty, or did we end up as indentured servants? Read on to discover the secrets of Tryon Palace!

A Look Into the History of Tryon Palace

A Palace for the Royal Governor

Built in 1770, Tryon Palace served as the residence of British Royal Governor William Tryon and was North Carolina’s first permanent state capitol. Designed to showcase British rule in the colonies, the palace was a symbol of power and wealth—but also a source of controversy, as colonists objected to the high taxes needed to fund its construction.

Revolutionary War & Fire Destruction

The palace played an important role in Revolutionary War history, serving as a hub for government affairs until it was destroyed by fire in 1798. For over 150 years, its remains were lost—until an ambitious 20th-century reconstruction project restored it to its former grandeur.

Reconstruction & Living History Museum

Today, Tryon Palace stands as a faithful reconstruction, thanks to detailed architectural plans, written accounts, and artifacts that survived the fire. It now functions as a living history museum, where visitors can walk through grand halls, watch craftsmen at work, and explore the daily lives of colonial citizens.

Must-See Attractions at Tryon Palace

🏰 The Governor’s Palace

Step inside the grand halls of the palace, where costumed guides share stories of royalty, rebellion, and resilience. From the ornate woodwork to the period furniture, every detail transports you back to the 18th century.

⚔️ Soldiers’ Encampments & Military Demonstrations

During special events, you’ll find reenactors portraying colonial soldiers, showcasing military drills, weapons demonstrations, and camp life. Dean and Gertie were fascinated by the authentic soldiers’ barracks and period uniforms!

🧪 The Apothecary: A Hands-On History Lesson

One of the most unique stops on our visit was the apothecary, where we learned about 18th-century medicine, herbal remedies, and even colonial “pox treatments.” The kids were thrilled (and a little grossed out) when they received their very own pox jar!

🌿 The Tryon Palace Gardens

Beyond the palace walls lies 16 acres of lush gardens, designed to match historical colonial-era plantings. The gardens change with the seasons, making every visit unique. The kids loved running through the maze-like hedges and admiring the vibrant flowers!

🖨️ The Print Shop & Blacksmithing Workshop

Ever wonder how newspapers were made in the 1700s? At the print shop, visitors can watch and even try their hand at an old-fashioned printing press. The blacksmith shop showcases traditional ironworking techniques, giving a glimpse into colonial craftsmanship.
